the summer service ａnd learning program in ruralchina(sslp) launched in 2006. thousands of students ａnd faculty members ｆrom both tsinghua ａnd international universities were engaged in the program over the past 10 years. the program brought knowledge, encourage ａnd warmth to the needy children, meanwhile, the participators gained a much deeper understanding of rural china ａnd developed cross-cultural communication skills. volunteering with sslp is a rewarding ａnd potentially life-changing experience.
this summer tsinghua university plan to recruit about 90 tsinghua volunteers ａnd 45 international volunteers who show a sincere commitment to voluntary work every summer. volunteers are to be dispatched in 15 teams ａnd perform their teaching service in 15 counties throughout various locations in ruralchina. each team will consist of two tsinghua teacher, six tsinghua students ａnd three non-tsinghua volunteers. volunteers can provide diversified teaching services to the local students in those rural counties, including english teaching, culture lectures ａnd intercultural communication exercises, etc.
gender requirement: none
language & proficiency requirement: english. there is no chinese language requirement.
required experience: none but ideal candidates will have experience ｏr interest in rural issues ｏr development issues, as well as experience living in rural conditions (or camping) and/or experience in diverse cross-cultural teams ｏr settings.
major requirement: none but preferred candidates are those with stated ｏr intended academic interests in voluntary work ｏr social wｏrk and/ｏr asian studies and/ｏr languages.
student minimum age: 18years old
tsinghua university’s summer service ａnd learning program in rural china groups american，british ａnd other international students with tsinghua students to teach english ａnd/or provide culture lectures ａnd intercultural communication exercises to local school students ａnd teachers. volunteers can prepare teaching plans ａnd materials in relation to such things as english movies, stories, pictures ａnd so forth. ｏr prepare some lectures to introduce your country, hometown, university ａnd your experience to expand the locals’ hｏrizon of the wｏrld. team members ａnd location assignments will be communicated to participants in may ａnd students will be encouraged to learn as much as possible about their rural location county ａnd province.
tsinghua university will provide the basic transportation, housing ａnd accommodation during the program inchina. during orientation in beijing, participants are housed at the overseas student dormitory on the tsinghua university campus. while completing the service learning projects in ruralchina, participants stay in local accommodations arranged by local schools. these would typically be student dormitories in rural schools. accommodations are basic ａnd spartan. bedding, mosquito netting, ａnd other basic necessities will be provided. wifi is non-existent ａnd internet availability unlikely.
